I’ve finally done the obvious: added an installer for the Google Reader Notifer application. Now you don’t have to bother figuring out where to put it. Just run the installer and it’s all good to go.

The installer will automatically add the notifier to your startup folder, so it should start up with windows. There’s not currently a preference to turn this off, although I imagine I could add one if I really felt like it. I also added a bugfix for the notification sometimes showing behind other windows… it should now show up in front.

The next version will show the new items in the menu when you click on the icon, the same way the Mac version does. You’ll be able to turn the preference on/off as well as set the number of items.

I’m a big fan of Google Reader, but I don’t always have firefox right in front of me, so I sometimes don’t notice when new items come in. There’s a great notifier for Mac already, but nothing for windows… until now.

I was originally trying to make this version work the same as the Mac version, but that’s not completely possible, so I went a little off track.

When you get new items, you’ll get this popup menu, that slides in similarly to the Google Talk new mail notification (You can also turn this off if you want, although it wouldn’t be very helpful)

There’s also an icon in the tray that you can hover your mouse over to see the current count:

If you right click the icon in the tray, you can check right away, go to the reader home page, or launch the preferences page.

The preferences page has a number of options that will look similar to the Mac version:

You can specify more than one item in the label filter box by just putting a space between items.
